Podcasts are a great teaching tool for kids, especially for language learning. A 2024 study published in the International Journal of English Language Studies looked at nearly a decade of classroom research and found that podcasts help students improve listening comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation, and motivation. This makes them especially helpful for multilingual learners and for students who understand content better when they hear it rather than read it. Providing students with the option of using podcasts as a way to access information also aligns with Universal Design for Learning by giving students flexible, accessible ways to engage with content. I gave a quiz last Tuesday that I made in about forty-five seconds. It covered cellular respiration, had eight questions, and caught a misconception about ATP that I probably would have missed until the unit test. That quiz did more for my third-period class than the review worksheet I spent an evening writing the week before. I want to be honest about this: I was skeptical of AI-generated assessments. I teach biology, and for years I have believed that writing my own questions is part of knowing my students. And I still believe that, mostly. But I have also come…
contributed by Stewart Hase, Heutagogy of Community Practice This typology is an attempt to redefine how we think of learning in modern classroom context. Current definitions of learning focus on performance rather than holistic growth, and on what the learner can do after a learning experience. Gagne is perhaps the most notable exception. General dictionary definitions of learning refer to learning as the acquisition of knowledge. The prevailing psychological definition is that learning is a change in behavior resulting from experience. Both these definitions seem inadequate given recent advances in neuroscience that shows us how complex a process is learning. We are much…

Think about what it actually takes to be a successful learner. It’s not just someone who follows instructions well. It’s someone who can set a goal, figure out how to reach it, monitor their own progress, and adjust when things aren’t working. That’s self-direction. And it’s one of the most valuable skills a student can develop. A 2020 study found that self-directed learning has a measurable impact on student motivation and academic achievement. And it should be developed starting in the earliest years of school. Yet many classrooms still default to the opposite: teachers making the decisions, and students compliantly…
