Every seasoned teacher can tell you that classroom management is one of the most important skills a teacher can have, and it all starts with a clear classroom routines and procedures checklist. After all, even if you prepare the best lessons, have the most welcoming classroom, and possess a wealth of knowledge, there won’t be much learning going on if your classroom is chaotic.

The key is to start the school year off right by teaching classroom procedures and establishing solid, reliable routines for students to follow every day. It takes a lot of front-loading, but once your kids have them down, you’ll be off to a great start. To help you begin, we’ve created this master checklist of classroom routines and procedures so you can thoughtfully build the structure that will benefit you, preserve your sanity, and, most importantly, help your students thrive.

This checklist will help you keep track of which strategies you’ve taught and which you need to still tackle. Just fill out the form on this page to get yours.

How To Use the Classroom Routines and Procedures Checklist

Divided into all the pertinent classroom situations, the checklist covers everything from the start of the day to the final bell. In each section, we suggest a few activities, then leave blank spaces for you to add your favorite strategies. Here are just a few topics that are included in the checklist:

    • Teach students hand signals so they can communicate their needs without interrupting the flow.
    • Lay down the ground rules for recess so playground conflicts are minimized.
    • Arrival and dismissal are prime times for misbehavior. Teach students how to enter and exit peacefully.
    • In between lessons, kids can easily get off track. Teach them what is expected so you can transition smoothly.
    • Almost every classroom utilizes technology. Teach kids how to properly use and care for their devices.
    • It’s critical for students to keep a cool head when emergencies happen. Explain and rehearse so kids know what to expect.
    • Managing resources is an important part of maintaining order in the classroom. Have a routine for turning in papers, handing in library books, sharpening pencils, borrowing school supplies, etc.

    Why Use the Checklist

Teaching procedures and routines is a standard part of the beginning of each school year. But sometimes it’s hard to keep track of what you’ve covered and what you still need to teach. Our checklist is a great organizational tool to keep all your classroom management lessons in one centralized location.

    What’s Included on the Checklist

The checklist covers everything from communication to how to use classroom resources, work with classmates, and take care of technology. Also included are spaces for you to add your own customized must-dos.

Hand Signals, Recess, Arrival, and Dismissal

Establishing what is expected during busy times like the beginning and end of the day, during lesson time, and at recess helps kids navigate the day seamlessly.

    Classroom, Bathroom, Transitions, and Tech

Without procedures and routines, the day could easily get bogged down by a million questions. By playing out different scenarios and letting kids practice, the little things are handled so you can all focus on the big things—like learning.

Knowing ahead of time what to do in different situations allows kids to take ownership of their reactions and behavior. It promotes respect for other people and for the classroom environment.

Why Teachers Love Classroom Procedures and Routines

Most teachers have experienced the frustration of having kids continually come to them looking for answers: “Where do I turn in my paper?” “My pencil broke.” “Can I go to the bathroom?” When clear procedures and routines are established, students learn to solve their own problems and complete tasks on their own rather than relying on the teacher for every little thing. In addition, when students know what to expect, there is less wiggle room for misbehavior to occur and more time available for learning.

Why Students Love Procedures and Routines

Predictable procedures and routines help students feel safe and secure because they know what to expect throughout the day. This in turn gives them confidence to manage responsibilities and work independently rather than relying on the teacher for direction (see above). In addition, shared expectations help students work together respectfully and contribute to a calm, productive atmosphere where learning can flourish.
