Think your class can read 500 billion pages? Maybe not, but you can join the ThriftBooks 500 Billion Page Challenge with this awesome free poster, which will be mailed to you. The poster includes activity sheets that will teach students something new about reading and encourage them to record and share the books they read with each other and the world.

    Inside the Reading Poster Kit

There’s enough here to keep students busy for weeks with a poster-sized “This Class Loves To Read” page to color in, plus eight lesson pages on the back.

This Class Loves To Read Poster

Take turns coloring in this poster and create a bulletin board around it, or leave it in the calming corner for students to work on over time. There’s enough space on the poster for everyone in your class to contribute.

“What’s the Story?” Article and Response Sheet

Learn recent reading statistics and answer questions about why Americans are reading less. This article and the reflection questions will prompt a discussion about how these trends play out in your class, or how your students go against the trend.

    Goal-Setting Sheet

At this point in the year, students have already read a ton. Now that they’re in a groove, have them set a goal. How many pages can your class read? How can they contribute to ThriftBooks’ 500 Billion Page Challenge?

    Reading Tracker

Students may be used to reading trackers already, but this one combines math and reading by totaling the number of pages they’re reading, then adding it to a class page tracker.

    Book Recommendation Bookmarks

The best way to get to 500 billion pages is by sharing book recs. As students read, they can create bookmarks about each book so the next reader can get a preview before reading.

    Make a PSA

This project is a perfect way to start or end your school’s book challenge. Students choose an audience and write a public service announcement about the 500 Billion Page Challenge or reading in general. To finish the project, film or produce the PSA and share it with the intended audience.

25 Ways To Read More at School

Hang this poster in your reading corner. How many of these reading tasks do you already do? Which do students want to try?

    We Are Teachers

25 Ways To Read at Home

Use this bingo-style game to encourage students to read at home. They can total the pages they read while reading books set in a location they’d like to visit or books that pair with movies, and fill out their bingo card as well.

How To Use the Poster Kit

The poster coloring page and activities are great for:

    • Encouraging friendly school-level competition: Each participating class can post the completed poster outside their door and their page tally on a bulletin board.
    • Bring math into reading (or reading into math): Have students create math problems, graphs, and charts to analyze and show the types of books they’re reading (e.g., if students read 1,459 pages of Harry Potter, what percent of the total pages read is Harry Potter?).
    • Reading buddies: Pair older students with younger students to get those pages read. Every page of a picture book read together counts toward the younger student’s pages.
    • Pillows and pages: Invite parents into the building with pillows to read with their child. During or after school, every page read together is a page earned.
    • Being part of something bigger: Log students’ pages at ThriftBooks and watch the pages add up.

Why Teachers Love the Reading Poster Kit

These activities are fun and fresh and have just the right amount of friendly competition. It’s a great way to inject energy into end-of-year reading.

Why Students Love the Reading Poster Kit

All pages count. A page of a novel is worth the same as a picture book or easy reader, so all readers can participate. And the bookmarks, PSA, and reading ideas provide new ways for kids to engage with books.

Get your free reading poster kit mailed right to your home or school!

    We Are Teachers

Just fill out the form on this page and we’ll send you the reading poster kit with all of the resources listed above!
