Let students take the lead as storytellers and reporters! The Edit Digital Storytelling Challenge has middle and high school students create a digital news report focused on a sports- or wellness-related topic, giving them a meaningful way to share their ideas beyond the classroom. As they produce their reports, they practice communication skills and grow their digital literacy. Winning schools can earn prizes like GoPro gear, and more!

Give Your Students a Platform with The Edit

You can inspire the next generation of media talent through The Edit’s fun digital storytelling challenge.

The Edit Digital Storytelling Challenge helps middle and high school students build critical skills like communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving by helping them produce their own 90-second video news reports.

The Edit was built to integrate with middle and high school curricula, giving teachers the opportunity to teach essential digital skills in a creative way—and in just a few class periods. The challenge is easy to incorporate into your classroom curriculum and your schedule.

When you register, you’ll get access to The Edit Portal and its detailed instructions, video tutorials, examples of winning news reports, and more. All you have to do is follow the guided instructions to share your students’ digital creativity with the world!

Here’s a sneak peek at the critical communication and digital literacy skills your students will learn as they participate in The Edit:

    Step 1: Prep their story

Students start by choosing a sports or wellness topic they care about and doing the research to support it. They’ll gather credible information and shape a clear, balanced angle, because strong digital storytelling begins with understanding the facts.

From there, students turn what they’ve learned into a short script for a 30-to-90-second video news report. Inside The Edit Portal, teachers will find step-by-step guidance and practical tips to help students brainstorm, research, and write with confidence.

    Step 2: Create digital stories

Next, students bring their research and script to life by producing a creative, news-style video report. They’ll record their narration and/or on-camera segments, capture supporting footage, and organize everything into a clear story.

Then comes the build: In Adobe Express, students stitch clips together with purposeful editing, using visuals and sound to strengthen their message. The Edit Portal includes step-by-step directions and video tutorials to help students stay on track and create a polished final report.

    Step 3: Edit the content

Next, students refine their work in Adobe Express to create a final cut that’s clear, engaging, and ready to share.

They can elevate their report with voiceovers, music, on-screen text, graphics, and other final touches. Final edits make the story easier to follow and more compelling. Adobe Express also includes built-in assets like audio, images, and design elements, so students can personalize their videos while keeping a polished, news-style look.

    Step 4: Submit and compete

Now it’s time to share your students’ finished news reports beyond the classroom!

Submit completed videos to The Edit digital storytelling challenge for the opportunity for your school to receive prizes from NBCU Academy and Adobe. Selected winning reports may also be featured across NBCU Academy and Adobe social channels, giving student storytellers a wider audience for the work they created.

Register for The Edit for the opportunity to win!

If you teach grade 6-12 students in the United States, you can register your classroom to participate in The Edit today. It’s completely FREE! After you’ve registered, we’ll share all of the printable and digital resources you need to help your students create their video news reports and compete in The Edit Digital Storytelling Challenge.

Don’t forget that your school can receive big prizes from Adobe and NBCU Academy like GoPro equipment, and more!
