DIY $4 rake

DW wished a rake to get the cuttings off of the garden, whereas I simply wished to allow them to be… So I constructed a rake.

The rake is made out of a $2 8 foot lengthy 2×4 which I ripped [lengthwise] with a handsaw. I used one half for the deal with and the opposite half for the rake (crossbar) itself. The 19 enamel got here from two $0.99 3/8″ dowels that are lower to 2.5″. They’re spaced 5/4″ aside in 1/2″ deep holes I drilled with a brace and auger. These are glued in. The deal with is fitted onto the rake with a thru-tenon which is pulled in by an offset dowel which additionally makes the center tooth; this isn’t glued in permitting me to take the rake aside once more. The mortise was made with a chisel. This joint is kind of stable with none give thus I didn’t need to put in diagonal helps which might have difficult the matter.

The rake works very properly. The grass doesn’t persist with the enamel. This all the time appears to be the case for steel rakes which annoys me. Nevertheless, the rake is a bit on the heavy aspect, most likely due to the large deal with. I didn’t need to spend an excessive amount of time planing it down. Perhaps if I get bored with the load, I’ll airplane it down some extra and make a supremely completely balanced rake.

In conclusion, I imagine I now have a greater rake for 3-5 occasions lower than it will price to purchase one.

PS: It’s conceivable that one might choose up a $1 rake at a yard sale or get one at freecycle. Nevertheless, as per the primary paragraph, this was an pressing matter.
